Your Role as a Systems Engineering Lead

As a permanent Systems Engineering Lead within our client facing teams, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering high-quality, resilient, and secure digital solutions. You will go beyond designing systems to actively influencing the delivery of operational capabilities, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and engineering best practices.

Your responsibilities will include:

‍

• Architectural Leadership.  Design, document, and maintain complex software and system architectures that meet operational and security requirements within the Defence domain 

‍

• Solution Guidance. Mentor engineers and other team members, supporting them in adopting architectural patterns, best practices, and understanding system data flows.

‍

• Design Review. Review designs of complex systems to ensure maintainability, scalability, and performance.

‍

• Collaborate with MOD Architects. Collaborate with MOD Architects to co-develop scalable, secure, and future-ready architectures that accelerate delivery timelines, improve maintainability, and ensure coherence across Naval defence systems.

‍

• System & Data Pipelines. Collaborate with domain experts to define data processing pipelines and end-to-end solutions that meet operational needs.

‍

• Prototype & Proof-of-Concept. Lead the creation of prototypes and pilot solutions to validate design decisions and new concepts.

‍

• Operational Delivery. Oversee the deployment of reliable software applications and services into orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, ensuring compliance with Defence security and operational standards.

‍

• Knowledge Sharing. Document architectural decisions, a blueprint, and maintain a culture of knowledge sharing across projects and communities.

‍

• Problem Solving. Identify gaps, risks, and opportunities within existing systems, translating operational and Solution needs into actionable architectural solutions.

Solution Expertise:

We are seeking a Systems Engineering Lead with a proven track record of designing and delivering complex systems in operational environments. Key expertise includes:

• Software & Systems engineering. Expert understanding of software and systems architecture principles, with a focus on maintainability, resilience, and security. Experience of MBSE and EA tools such as EA Sparx or Cameo.
• MOD experience. Experience of complex systems in a Naval environment. 
• Disconnected Environments. Understanding of how systems need to be built and run within a disconnected environment.
• Operational delivery. Proven ability to deliver operational-ready solutions used in real-world environments.
• Collaboration & mentorship. Skilled at working with multi-disciplinary teams, providing guidance, and driving best practices.
• Problem Solving & Innovation. Ability to operate in uncertainty, identify capability gaps, and translate complex requirements into actionable solutions.
• Quality & Standards. Deep knowledge of software quality standards and adherence to Defence-relevant compliance frameworks.

Desirable:  

• Cloud technologies - Kubernetes, containerisation, virtualisation and microservices
• Programming languages. Python and a compiled, strongly-typed language such as C or C++.
• APIs & Integration. Experience designing and building APIs and integrating software across multiple teams and suppliers.
• Degree in a STEM Based Subject.
